How reminders and notifications work in Habits

By Habits

Habits includes configurable reminders for:

  • Medication;
  • Water;
  • Exercise;
  • scheduled Programme Workouts.

It also includes a Water-goal progress check based on the tracking goal you set.

The current reminders are local device notifications. Your iPhone settings affect whether and how they appear, and notification delivery is not guaranteed.

The short version

Habits reminders work like this:

  1. You choose the reminder settings in Habits.
  2. iPhone notification permission must also allow Habits notifications.
  3. Habits schedules the current reminder on your device.
  4. iPhone settings and notification rules affect whether and how it is presented.
  5. The reminder prompts you to open or use Habits. It does not automatically prove that an action happened.

The current reminder system covers Medication, Water and Exercise-related routines.

Configured local reminders can work without an internet connection once they have been set up.

In-app reminder settings and iPhone permission are two separate layers

Turning a reminder on inside Habits is only one part of the setup.

iPhone also controls whether Habits is authorised to present notifications.

If iPhone notification permission for Habits is turned off, a reminder you configured inside the app may not appear as an alert.

You can review the current permission in:

iPhone Settings → Notifications → Habits

Permission can change later

You can change notification permission after the first decision.

If you turn notifications off in iPhone Settings, Habits should not be treated as able to guarantee that an in-app reminder toggle will produce an alert.

Medication reminders are configured per medication

Each medication can have its own reminder setting.

The current documented flow supports:

  • reminder times configured for the medication;
  • an individual on/off control for that medication;
  • tapping the notification to open the Medication area.

A reminder and a dose record are separate

A Medication notification is a prompt.

It does not mean Habits has confirmed that you took the medication.

When you want Habits to record the dose, use the Medication logging control in the app.

HEALTH / SAFETY BOUNDARY

The reminder time reflects what you configured.

Habits does not use the reminder to decide:

  • what dose you should take;
  • when your medical schedule should change;
  • what to do after a missed dose.

Choose a Water reminder interval

Habits can schedule recurring Water reminders at intervals of:

  • every 1 hour;
  • every 2 hours;
  • every 3 hours;
  • every 4 hours.

You can also set active hours so the recurring reminders are limited to the part of the day you choose.

For example, active hours can prevent the configured Water reminder from being scheduled throughout the night.

The Water reminder is a tracking prompt

A Water reminder is not:

  • a dehydration diagnosis;
  • a medical fluid prescription;
  • a recommendation that every user needs the same amount of Water.

Your Hydration goal in Habits is a tracking goal that you configure.

Learn more: Hydration Tracking →

Habits can also check progress against your own Water goal

The current Hydration reminder system includes a midday Water-goal check.

You can configure the check around:

  • 25%;
  • 50%;
  • 75%;

of your own daily Hydration tracking goal.

If the recorded total has not reached the selected percentage at the check point, Habits can provide a nudge.

Important distinction

This compares your logged Water progress with the tracking goal you configured.

It does not mean Habits has clinically assessed:

  • your hydration status;
  • dehydration;
  • the amount of fluid your body medically needs.

Choose the days and time for an Exercise reminder

The current Exercise reminder supports:

  • a time you set;
  • selected days of the week.

That means the reminder can fit the days you choose rather than having to appear every day.

This is not medical Exercise clearance

The notification reminds you about an Exercise routine you configured.

It does not determine:

  • whether you are medically safe to exercise;
  • what Exercise is appropriate for an injury or condition;
  • what intensity you should use.

Programme reminders can follow workout days

If you are enrolled in one of the structured Habits Exercise programmes, the current system can schedule a Programme Workout reminder on workout days.

You can configure the reminder time.

The reminder is tied to the Programme schedule rather than appearing indiscriminately every day.

Rest days

The product documentation says structured programmes contain workout days and rest days.

The public guide should describe Programme Workout reminders as firing on workout days.

Do not promise a notification on rest days unless the current running build explicitly implements one.

Configured local reminders can work without internet

The current Habits reminder system uses local device notifications.

Once a reminder is configured on the device, it does not need a live internet connection merely for the scheduled local notification to be presented.

The app also does not need to remain open in the foreground for an iPhone local notification to be presented.

If Habits is already open

When an app is in the foreground, iOS gives the notification to the app for handling.

That means a foreground reminder may not necessarily look identical to the Lock Screen or banner alert you see when the app is in the background.

The exact Habits foreground presentation should be checked in the current running build.

But this does not mean the entire Habits app works offline

Other Habits features can still require:

  • network access;
  • data sync;
  • server services;
  • AI connectivity.

This guide only describes the documented offline behaviour of configured local reminders.

Your iPhone controls notification presentation too

If a reminder is not appearing as expected, useful settings to check include:

Allow Notifications

In iPhone Settings, Habits needs permission to send notifications.

Focus

A Focus can silence or delay ordinary app notifications depending on your settings.

iOS also has a separate Time Sensitive notification level that can break through Focus when an app uses it and you allow it.

This guide does not claim Habits currently uses Time Sensitive notifications until the shipped reminder configuration is verified.

Scheduled Summary

iPhone can place selected ordinary app notifications into a scheduled summary rather than presenting them immediately.

Time Sensitive notifications can behave differently when that level is enabled and permitted.

Sounds and display settings

You can control whether an app's notifications:

  • play a sound;
  • appear on the Lock Screen;
  • appear in Notification Center;
  • appear as banners.

Notification previews

You can also control when a notification preview is visible.

On current iPhone software, the available preview choices include:

  • Always
  • When Unlocked
  • Never

The Habits app lock and iPhone notification previews are different controls

Habits supports Face ID / Touch ID app locking on supported devices.

That controls access to the Habits app.

Your iPhone separately controls whether notification previews can be seen on the Lock Screen.

If you prefer more discretion around health-related notifications, review the notification-preview setting for Habits in iPhone Settings.

Treat a reminder as a convenience, not a guaranteed medical alert

iPhone's notification system makes every attempt to deliver notifications in a timely way, but delivery is not guaranteed.

That is one reason Habits should not be used as:

  • an emergency alert system;
  • a medical monitoring system;
  • the only place you rely on for a time-critical health instruction.

This guide also does not claim that Habits Medication reminders are Critical Alerts or otherwise guaranteed to override Focus, Scheduled Summary, silent mode or other system controls.

The current reminder system is not an AI feature

Medication, Water and Exercise-related reminders are part of the core Habits product.

You do not need to enable optional AI simply to use the documented reminder system.

Optional AI has separate controls in the Habits AI Privacy Dashboard.

The current verified reminder list is deliberately specific

The current product reference documents reminders for:

  • Medication;
  • Water;
  • Water-goal progress;
  • Exercise;
  • Programme Workouts.

This guide does not currently claim dedicated reminder controls for:

  • Mood;
  • Sleep;
  • Weight;
  • Food/Nutrition;
  • Progress Photos;
  • Body Measurements;
  • Side Effects.

If the product later adds one of these reminder types, this guide should be updated after running-build QA.

Habits reminder questions

Do Habits reminders need internet?

Configured local reminders can work without an internet connection once they are set up.

That does not mean every Habits feature works offline.

What if I turned a reminder on in Habits but iPhone notifications are off?

The iPhone permission and the in-app reminder setting are separate.

Review Settings → Notifications → Habits and make sure notifications are allowed if you want iPhone to present Habits alerts.

Will a Medication reminder always break through Focus or silent mode?

This guide does not claim that.

iOS has separate Time Sensitive and Critical notification behaviours, but the current Habits product reference does not document the shipped interruption level or any Critical Alert entitlement.

Your iPhone notification and Focus settings therefore remain important.

Does the Habits app need to stay open?

No.

Local iPhone notifications can be presented when the app is not open, subject to iPhone notification permission and system behaviour.

Are Habits reminders guaranteed to arrive?

No.

iPhone notification delivery is not guaranteed.

Can I turn off a Medication reminder?

Yes.

The current Medication system has a per-medication reminder on/off control.

Can I tap a Medication reminder to open the tracker?

Yes.

The documented Medication notification opens the Medication area when tapped.

How often can Water reminders appear?

The current interval choices are every 1, 2, 3 or 4 hours.

Can I stop Water reminders overnight?

The Water reminder feature includes configurable active hours.

Use those hours to define the part of the day in which the recurring Water reminders should be active.

What is the Water goal check?

It is a midday progress nudge based on a percentage of the daily Hydration tracking goal you configured.

It is not a dehydration detector or medical fluid recommendation.

Can I choose Exercise reminder days?

Yes.

The documented Exercise reminder includes day-of-week selection and a user-set time.

Do Programme Workout reminders happen every day?

The documented Programme reminder fires on workout days while you are enrolled in a structured programme.

Do reminders prove I completed the activity?

No.

A reminder is a prompt.

Where Habits provides a tracker/logging action, the actual record remains separate from the notification.

Does Face ID hide my reminder text?

Not by itself.

Habits' app lock and iPhone notification-preview controls are separate.

Set the reminders that fit your routine.

Choose the current Medication, Water and Exercise reminders you want to use — and keep the notification separate from the record of what actually happened.

Small print:
Habits reminders are product notifications, not medical monitoring or guaranteed alerts. Notification delivery depends on device permissions and operating-system behaviour.
